Shark Awareness Day Surprise!
July 14th marks Shark Awareness Day, a time to celebrate these incredible ocean predators and highlight their vital role in marine ecosystems. It’s more than just a day of appreciation; it’s a chance to challenge common misconceptions about sharks, raise awareness about the threats they face, and inspire action to protect them. Shark Awareness Day also ties into the bigger picture of ocean education, helping us all better understand the delicate balance of life beneath the waves.

Last week, students in our Youth Summer All-Day Fishing Program had an unforgettable experience on the water...they accidentally caught a sand tiger shark (safely released, of course!) along with some other impressive catches. They even closed out the week with a pod of dolphins escorting their boat, a perfect ending to an awe-inspiring few days on the water!
Though they may look fierce, sand tiger sharks are slow-moving, have a gentle demeanor, and are vital to ocean health. These sharks are a protected species in many regions, and moments like this give us a chance to learn more about the role they play in marine ecosystems.
Did you know?
- Sand tiger sharks give birth to only 1–2 pups every few years, making them especially vulnerable to population decline.
- They help keep fish populations in check, supporting balance across the food web.
- Human threats like overfishing, habitat destruction, and negative perceptions have led to a decline in many shark species.

You can help protect sharks by:
✔️ Supporting policies that limit bycatch and protect critical shark habitats
✔️ Using circle hooks and barbless tackle when fishing to reduce harm to marine life
✔️ Learning to identify and safely release protected species
✔️ Spreading awareness that sharks are essential
