Meet the Marine Mavens: Finding Their Place on the Water
"For many young women, the ocean can feel like a world apart — something to admire from shore rather than explore firsthand. The New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) is changing that through Marine Mavens, a year-round, after-school program that helps girls ages 9–17 discover their confidence, community, and connection to the sea.
In a field long dominated by men, Marine Mavens opens the door for girls to experience the water safely, build foundational seamanship and science skills, and connect with mentors who show them what’s possible. The result is a supportive community of young women who see themselves reflected in the maritime world and know they belong there...
Building Belonging Through Experience
Marine Mavens isn’t just about teaching science; it’s about opening the door to it. The program creates a welcoming space where girls can explore the shoreline, gain real skills on the water, and see that they have a place in ocean-related fields.
Through kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, powerboating, and stewardship projects, students experience the marine environment firsthand. Along the way, they earn nationally recognized certifications such as Safe Powerboat Handling and Red Cross CPR/First Aid, building tangible credentials that reinforce their growing confidence and sense of capability.
'We see it every year,' says Sarah Warren, NESS’s Director of Sailing. 'Students arrive unsure of what to expect, and they leave knowing the ocean is theirs to navigate, that they belong here.'
Each session blends hands-on adventure with lessons in leadership and safety. Younger participants (ages 9–11) learn foundational skills in kayaking, sailing, and marine ecology through exploration of local tide pools and coastal ecosystems. Older participants (ages 12–17) progress to more advanced seamanship, powerboating, and water safety while deepening their understanding of marine environments and the people who work to protect them.
Science is the spark that ignites curiosity; a gateway into the world of ocean discovery. Students develop an understanding that they can be a part of it, whether in roles as scientists, educators, captains, or community stewards..."
