Fun with Flares!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]At NESS, we specialize in taking experiential learning and applying skills to real-life instances by doing, seeing, and feeling firsthand; that also applies to our staff! Last week, NESS staff joined Fire Chief Jeff Hoadley and Firefighter Bob Peacock of the Stonington Borough Fire Department to learn how to store, maintain, and operate flares properly!

The US Coast Guard requires all vessels in coastal waters, the Great Lakes, and high seas to carry visual distress signals for nighttime use, and boats between 16-65.6 ft must carry visual distress signals for both daytime and nighttime use. NESS’s extensive fleet holds a variety of these devices, and thanks to this training exercise, our team practiced using each type![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”13349,13350,13351,13352,13353,13354,13355,13356,13357″ img_size=”large”][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Safety is our top priority at NESS, and every employee must undergo safety training and certifications throughout the year. All NESS full-time staff must be Professional Rescuers, including certifications in CPR, AED, and First Aid. Staff certifications can also include the following:

– American Red Cross Lifeguard
– Stop the Bleed
– Level 1 US Sailing- Small Boat Instructor
– Level 2 US Sailing- Race Coach
– Level 3 US Sailing- Head Coach
– US Power Boating
– US Coast Guard Captains License
– ACA Kayakers
and more!

We prepare throughout the year by doing in-service training and spontaneous rescue drills with all our staff. Once a month, staff members on our Safety Committee create an example of a possible accident, and then, as a team, we practice how we would execute a rescue. These rescue drills are random and can happen at any time!
