New England Science & Sailing Names Mark Adams New Chairman of the Board of Directors
STONINGTON, CT – New England Science & Sailing (NESS), a nationally recognized and award-winning nonprofit ocean adventure education organization, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Adams as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors. Adams succeeds Spike Lobdell, NESS Founder and CEO, who will now serve as President and CEO of the organization.
Mark Adams joined the NESS Board in 2018, bringing decades of experience in business leadership, operations, and strategic growth. Adams began his career at Johnson & Johnson, where he spent 12 years advancing through roles in accounting, operations, product management, and international marketing. In 1993, he partnered with Warburg Pincus, a leading venture capital firm, to acquire a small medical device company, serving as its President and CEO. Over the next two decades, Adams collaborated with renowned firms such as Bain Capital and First Chicago, leading and growing multiple companies as CEO.

Being on the water, it’s where I feel most at home.

I was a starting quarterback in college and never missed a game or practice in four years.

Success - not just my own, but helping others achieve it too.

Use your ears, listening is one of the most powerful skills you can develop.

Set up a charitable giving foundation to make a lasting impact.

What interests you most about NESS’s mission?
By far, the kids - it’s all about inspiring the next generation.
Which of NESS’s core values do you align with most and why?
Using the ocean as a learning tool - there’s no better classroom than the water.
What philanthropic work have you done outside of NESS?
I’ve been involved in various youth programs, from coaching to fundraising.
Have you served on any of NESS’s Board committees?
Yes, I’ve served on the Safety Committee for three years. Safety is always the top priority!
What is your vision for the future of NESS?
To fully utilize our resources to transform how students approach learning; making it more hands-on, engaging, and impactful.
