Safety at NESS
Safety is our top priority at NESS and every employee is required to undergo safety trainings and certifications throughout the year. All NESS full-time staff are required to be Professional Rescuers which includes certifications in CPR, AED, and First Aid. Staff certifications can also include:
– American Red Cross Lifeguard
– Stop the Bleed
– Level 1 US Sailing- Small Boat Instructor
– Level 2 US Sailing- Race Coach
– Level 3 US Sailing- Head Coach
– US Power Boating
– US Coast Guard Captains License
– ACA Kayakers
and more!
We prepare throughout the year by doing in-service training and spontaneous rescue drills with all our staff. Once a month, staff members on our Safety Committee create an example of a possible accident, and then as a team, we practice how we would execute a rescue. These rescue drills are random and can happen at any time!
This past Friday, NESS staff participated in safety training with the Stonington Borough Fire Department and Stonington Ambulance members. The training covered Stop the Bleed training, to learn what to do on the scene of an accident that has caused major bleeding, and practice applying pressure and using tourniquets.
In addition to emergency medical practices, staff members discussed and refreshed their skills with the 4 main types of fires and how to extinguish them safely. Thanks to the training, they were able to practice with actual fire extinguishers!

Our staff are American Red Cross Professional Rescuers and Lifeguards. Stop the Bleed training and fire safety training are not required for those certifications, but they help us build on our knowledge of what to do in a serious emergency! These trainings with SBFD and Stonington Ambulance allowed our staff to ask questions and work with the professionals in our community who save lives every day.
