NESS TO HOST FREE GREEN HARBOR YOUTH SAILING KICKOFF CEREMONY JULY 6TH
NEW LONDON, CT – New England Science & Sailing (NESS) will host a Kickoff Ceremony for their Annual New London Sailing Summer Programs on Thursday, July 6th at 8 AM at Green Harbor Beach, New London. This ceremony is free and open to the public.
As a US Sailing recognized Community Boating Center, NESS offers FREE week-long sailing programs during the summer for students and children of New London. NESS took stewardship of the New London Community Boating program in 2015 and is proud to continue its original mission of eliminating social and economic barriers to sailing for the youth of New London. One of NESS’s four core values is INCLUSIVENESS, to open doors for on-the-water learning for all students regardless of ability or financial need.
NESS’s New London Initiative began in 2012 and has aimed to provide students with opportunities to access the water, thrive outside of the traditional classroom, gain skills necessary to succeed in education and careers, and become stewards of their community and the environment. Over the past nine years, NESS has funded over $2.7 million exclusively for New London programs operating year-round and has served over 8,600 students and counting. Community partnerships include the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London, New London Recreation Department, New London Youth Affairs, Ocean Beach Park, Alewife Cove Conservatory, and more.
NESS’s New London Sailing Programs do not require any sailing experience and provide a supportive environment where youth sailors of all ages and abilities can improve their skills while having fun. Students become familiar with water safety and are introduced to the different parts of the boat, knots, rigging, and steering before putting their new skills to use on the water.
