Be Like Spike!
Our team hosted a surprise send off for NESS Founder & CEO, SPIKE LOBDELL, which included dressing up like Spike! His many layers often include his NESS vest, NESS hat, and crazy socks…
THANK YOU, Spike, for your decades of hard work, dedication, and inspiration that made NESS what it is today. You are an amazing leader, role model, and supporter to our entire team! Wishing you fair winds! Enjoy your retirement!
Thank you Breakwater for hosting us for this special event!

As of June 1st, Spike Lobdell, NESS’s founder and CEO, will retire from the day-to-day leadership of the organization and assume the role of Chair-elect. Eric Isselhardt, PhD, NESS’s President, will become NESS’s second CEO since its founding in 2002!
Spike established NESS with a vision of enabling everyone to get out on the water, learning and having fun, regardless of financial needs. The core values of inclusiveness, experiential learning, personal growth, and stewardship remain his passion within NESS today.
In 2019, Spike received US Sailing’s “Marty” – The Martin A. Luray Award – the organization’s highest honor for contributions to public access and community sailing. Spike also has received the National Recreation Foundation’s Robert W. Crawford Achievement Prize in 2016, an award that recognizes the individual that has done the most to advance the lives of inner-city youth through recreation. He was also recognized, in 2016, by US Sailing as the Outstanding Organizational Leader of a sailing organization, and as Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year in 2021.
