Singing Science: How NESS's Bay Bounders Discovered Ocean Literacy Through Song & Joy

As the weather gets colder, we can’t help but look back at the joyful memories we created during this year’s summer programs. Our young explorers, known as the Bay Bounders (ages 6-7), dove into the depths of ocean literacy, discovering how our vast oceans influence weather and climate. But how were they able to grasp such a complex topic? Through the magic of music, of course!

Led by the enthusiastic and talented Laura Goretti, a NESS Summer Marine Science and Sailing Instructor, the Bay Bounders took a nautical journey where science and song integrated seamlessly. The song was created by Laura first asking a simple question, “What does the ocean mean to you?” From this brainstorming session sprang the parody titled “Oh My Dear Sea,” inspired by the beloved song “Under the Sea” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Laura and the Bay Bounders, feeling inspired, sang additional parodies of other favorite songs such as "Where You Are" from Disney's Moana.

Laura shared her thoughts on this unique approach, stating, “Singing with them to learn about marine sciences made my heart overflow with joy and hope. I’m so proud of them and so grateful for the wonderful opportunities NESS offers. Let them have fun, let them sing science, and ask for more!” Her passion for teaching shone brightly, making learning an unforgettable experience for our Bay Bounders.

As we reflect on this year’s adventures, we’re reminded of the power of creativity in education. It’s not just about simply presenting material to the learners, but rather about sparking curiosity and joy in young minds.
