The Sailing Museum: Stewardship

The Sailing Museum, National Sailing Hall of Fame, and America’s Cup Hall of Fame is opening in May 2022 in Newport, RI’s Historic Armory. “Interactive educational exhibits will provide real-world applications of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) concepts that come alive through sailing; and visitors of all ages, non-sailors and sailors alike, will experience the magic that happens when wind and water meet. The museum will be a national home for sailing, promoting the sport we love across the country and introducing it to new audiences.

The Sailing Museum will:
– Preserve a historic building and site that is steeped in sailing history
– Celebrate the heritage of the sport and honor those who have shaped it over time
– Support area educators through on-site, hands-on STEAM learning experiences
– Provide a first-rate tourist attraction that will add value to the Newport landscape
– Build community through partnerships, work, and volunteer opportunities
– Support our peer organizations in our common goal to grow sailing”

The Sailing Museum has called a unique opportunity for the sailing community to create a film exhibit for the museum’s opening. The goal is to create an innovative multi-media experience dedicated to celebrating sailing’s heritage while inspiring new generations of sailors and innovators. One specific exhibit is focusing on the importance of caring for the places we sail.

“As sailors, we have a unique bond with our oceans and waterways”, said Heather Ruhsam, Executive Director, The Sailing Museum. “We’ve seen firsthand that our lakes, rivers, oceans and seas are being threatened by pollution and declining habitat, which is damaging marine biodiversity and hurting coastal communities. We’ve also seen that the actions we take on land and sea can, and do, make a difference. Through The Sailing Museum, we can share our collective efforts from coast to coast with sailors and non-sailors alike, inspiring all to take action.”
