25 Years of NESS

For 25 years, New England Science & Sailing (NESS) has connected students to the ocean through hands-on experiential learning that builds confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging on the water. What began as a small summer program has grown into a community where thousands of students each year discover science, teamwork, and themselves through ocean-based experiences.

This milestone represents far more than time. It represents the students whose perspectives changed when they stepped aboard a boat for the first time, the classrooms that came alive through experiential learning, and the community that continues to believe everyone deserves access to the water.

As we celebrate 25 years, we remain committed to our mission: empowering students through ocean-based experiential learning — ensuring the ocean remains a place of discovery, opportunity, and inspiration for generations to come.

Our Story: Then vs. Now

NESS was founded in 2002 alongside the creation of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club as the SHYC Sailing Foundation. Founder Spike Lobdell envisioned an organization that would be truly inclusive — developing sailing and educational programs designed to benefit the entire community.

That first summer, NESS launched its programs with just 14 students, eight used Opti sailboats, and a big dream: expanding access to the water and inspiring the next generation of sailors, scientists, and environmental stewards.

A Vision Sets Sail

Founded with just 14 students and 8 boats, NESS began with a bold vision: to break down barriers and create inclusive access to the water. What started as a small, community-driven initiative quickly became a catalyst for change — introducing our community to the ocean as a classroom and a place of belonging.

Becoming Independent

NESS officially became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, establishing the foundation for long-term growth and impact. This milestone allowed us to expand programming, build partnerships, and focus fully on our mission to empower students through ocean-based education.

Expanding Our Campus & Programs

With the establishment of Marine Science Programs and our Stonington Harbor Campus, NESS broadened its educational offerings beyond sailing. Students could now explore marine ecosystems, oceanography, and environmental science — deepening the connection between water and learning.

A Year-Round Mission

Officially rebranding as NESS (New England Science & Sailing), we transitioned into year-round STEM programming. This shift allowed us to serve students beyond the summer months — integrating science, sailing, and experiential learning throughout the entire year.

Voices of NESS

“Our older kids absolutely loved their NESS program at Ocean Beach. Our program director even had tears in her eyes afterward. She said it was the first time she felt like the kids were simply able to be kids. She saw them fully engaged, laughing, and having a wonderful time, which has been a challenge lately with our older group.

For some of them, it was their first time touching ocean water and interacting with sea life. Thank you for providing such meaningful, high-quality programming for children. I know this experience will be a core memory for some of our kids.

- Corps Officer, New London Salvation Army

“Our NESS program was significantly impactful for my students. They were able to utilize hands-on learning opportunities through water collection and microscope work, see Newton's Laws of Motion in action, and, more importantly, they were able to see themselves connected to a community group outside of our school.

Within a one-day trip with NESS, students identified themselves as capable leaders, able to learn and experience new things that were once frightening to them. This SEL opportunity was truly life-changing for them!”

- Special Education Teacher, Chariho Alternative Learning Academy

“NESS taught me to be more confident, honest, and courageous because the program and the people who work in it want to inspire everyone to be successful in life.”

- NESS Student

“NESS is a well-run program with thoughtful staff and educators; the curriculum is important for kids and adults alike, for environmental awareness, team-building, and social/developmental skills.”

25 Years Campaign

For 25 years, NESS has empowered students through hands-on sailing and marine science. These experiences build confidence, spark curiosity, and transform how students see themselves and the world around them — opportunities made possible through the support of our community.

This milestone is more than a celebration; it’s a call to ensure even more students can access these life-changing experiences. With your support, NESS can expand access to ocean-based education, strengthen hands-on programs led by passionate educators, and provide scholarships that remove financial barriers so every student — regardless of background or ability — can experience the transformational power of learning on the water.

Your generosity helps ensure that every student can be inspired, empowered, and transformed as they discover their potential when the ocean becomes their classroom.

Corporate Naming Sponsorships

Naming an educational space or vessel is more than a sponsorship; it’s becoming part of the experiences that shape students for years to come. Each time a student arrives at NESS - nervous or excited, unsure or confident -they begin a journey. They learn to tie knots, read the wind, trust their crew, and believe in themselves.

No matter what, your name becomes a living tribute, one that welcomes, teaches, supports, and inspires students to explore what’s possible.
It is your legacy set in motion.

The Next 25 Years Start With You!

The past 25 years have shown what’s possible when students are given the opportunity to learn on the water. Now, we’re building toward the future.

In the years ahead, NESS will expand access to ocean-based learning, reach more schools and students, and grow the programs that empower students through science, sailing, and hands-on discovery. With continued support from our community, we will create new opportunities for students to connect with the ocean and the possibilities it holds.

This milestone isn’t just a celebration of where we’ve been; it's a launch point for where we’re going next. Together, we can ensure the next generation of students has the chance to learn, explore, and thrive on the water.
