Classroom & Travel Experiences

New England Science & Sailing provides Classroom & Travel Experiences and the ability to request a specially designed experience for each school & group's needs.

Classroom Experiences

We work with teachers to complement existing classroom curriculum with our experiential education model that ties to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Ocean Literacy Principles. Our educators will bring STEM alive with our unique approach. Students are divided into groups or rotations depending on activities and the number we will be accommodating.

Sample Classroom Experience

Global Climate Change: Stormy seas are coming! The heat exchange between the ocean and atmosphere can result in dramatic global and regional weather phenomena including sea-level rise. Explore the difference between weather and climate, use online modeling to simulate global climate change, and study the methods engineers use to protect our coastlines and cities from these potentially catastrophic events. Create your own model city and coastline and then test them against wind, waves, and sea level rise. Students work in teams to identify potential solutions and then make the necessary changes!

Travel Experiences

Can’t travel to us? NESS adventures can come to you! Explore your local natural environment, find the perfect location for a kayak watershed exploration (yes, we bring the kayaks!), and investigate ways to become a steward in your own backyard. Coordinate with the NESS to choose a site and a program that best fits your needs.

NESS in your Community

Ocean Beach Park, New London

Bring your group to Ocean Beach Park and call the Long Island Sound your playground for the day! Discover the marshes of Alewife Cove as you kayak, snorkel, or seine to get up close and personal with the organisms that call this place home. Take a hike on the nature path, explore the coastline, or test water quality as you connect with this unique environment.

Winnapaug Pond, Westerly

Take your group to Westerly! At our Westerly Ocean Adventures (WOA) site, the unique environments of Winnapaug Pond and coastal Misquamicut become your classroom. Experience ocean adventures as you ride the waves and learn water safety at the beach, or hop in a kayak and explore the biodiversity of the salt pond. There is so much to discover!
