Powerful Earth, Changing Waters

Water is a powerful force on the earth. Water can shape the coastline, it can float seemingly heavy objects and it can even break rock. Learn all about hydrology, the branch of science concerned with the properties of the earth's water, especially its movement in relation to land. Review the water cycle, perform water quality assessments, build your own watershed, and discover how water moves through sediment.

Winter Survivors

Surviving the elements of winter is an extreme task. Discover how animals are well suited to live in cold regions like the Arctic and the Antarctic. Take a look at the special features of walruses, penguins, polar bears, and other cold-dwelling animals. Investigate how our local coastal animals endure New England winter conditions.

February 7

Aquaponics

Work in teams to engineer a prototype aquaponics system.  Construct an aquatic flow system, balance water inputs and outputs through a series of components, understand the dynamic forces that work to keep fish and plants flourishing in an aquaponics system, and make connections with nutrient cycles.  Be introduced to some current aquaponic ventures to gain inspiration and compare and contrast your newly designed models.

March 7

Land Sailors

Design, engineer, and compete in teams against classmates as you build a land sailor that harnesses the power of wind using a sail, a PVC frame, and wheels.  Calculate speed as you and your team experiment with different frame designs, sail shapes and sizes, and wheel placement.

Sonar Sailing Sy-STEMs Part II

Wind is dynamic! Explore how wind is formed, determine its trends and patterns, and identify how it affects our sails and earth. Learn the basics of sailing a small keelboat in a setting that works with team building. This is a great class for individuals or groups of friends. An instructor is on board the whole time teaching how to sail this small keelboat.
