NESS in the News: AmeriCorps members continue service through pandemic

NESS SEA AmeriCorps was recently featured in The Day!

“…Anna Richey, 22, is also involved in education but through a different program: the NESS STEM Education Ambassador AmeriCorps Program. She studied wildlife conservation at Juniata College in Pennsylvania, and while looking for a job after graduating in May, AmeriCorps caught her eye. She loved that with NESS, she could get marine experience in addition to her terrestrial experience.

In the summer, she took kids out on the water, whether for fishing or snorkeling or surfing. Now, she’s doing tutoring, peer mentoring, and hands-on science projects.

Her main placement site is Joshua Center Thames Valley in Norwich, but she also works with the Drop-In Learning Center, New London Youth Affairs playgroup program, and New London Recreation, and she’ll soon start with the Norwich Public Schools afterschool program.

‘NESS takes their education very seriously, which is really great to see,” Richey said. “They give us a lot of training on lesson planning, so I’ve gotten a lot more experience with that.'”
