NESS at Thames River Magnet School

Last Friday, US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and Congressman Joe Courtney visited us in our classroom at Thames River Magnet School during their visit to Groton! The purpose of their visit was to discuss career opportunities and technical education in schools.

Thames River Magnet School has an Environmental and Marine Sciences theme and focuses their learning on direct, hands-on experiences through research and exploration. Aligning with NESS’s core values and education model, Thames River Magnet School hosts NESS programming and STEM-based curriculum. With this program, NESS SEA AmeriCorps members serve students in their own designated classroom, weekly. Not only do they teach all 450 students, but they also host and care for a substantial hydroponics system and tanks with live sea creatures.

“Olivia, Caroline, and James have been positive, energetic role models for our students. They have created lessons that complement our magnet themes and meet NGSS standards. Their lessons are hands-on and creative from singing songs about the layers of the ocean to having an actual Opti that students can simulate sailing. Students Look forward to their NESS lessons every week.”
