National Nonprofit Day 2021

August 17th is National Nonprofit Day!

“Every day, somewhere a volunteer reads to school children; a patient receives steady medication; a lawyer provides legal services for low-income individuals; or a first-time homebuyer is moving into his own home. On August 17, National Nonprofit Day (NND) reminds us that each of these scenes is possible because of the nonprofit sector and the work performed by capable men, women and organizations.

On this day, take some time to learn more about nonprofits, understanding that the funding for these organizations often satisfies more than the mission statement. They help everyone to see the benefits of supporting nonprofit organizations.

History of National Nonprofit Day

Established as a national day on August 17, 2017, National Nonprofit Day (NND) was created to educate, enlighten and empower others to make a difference, while acknowledging those that are in the trenches, impacting lives every day.

Why August 17th? When the U.S. initially imposed the first federal corporate tax on August 17, 1894, 127 years ago, it included an exemption for nonprofits and charities.

Unbeknown to most, little is discussed about nonprofits’ national economic impact; where the collective might of these groups have strengthened the quality of life for disenfranchised populations; have revitalized communities, and have aided in sustaining municipalities.

As astounding as it may sound, the nonprofit sector is the third largest employer in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies report. Employing 12.3 million people, with payrolls exceeding those of most other industries, including construction, transportation, and finance, the only industries employing more workers than the nonprofit sector are the retail trade, restaurants and hotels.

Recognized by nonprofits all over the world, with a large presence across social media platforms, Like the official National Nonprofit Day (NND) Facebook page at @NationalNonprofitDay to remain abreast of nonprofit news, and use #NationalNonprofitDay and #NND with your social network.”

Our mission at New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) is to empower students with a love of learning through ocean-based experiential programs that serve schools, teachers, and families. NESS is the first and only program of its kind to be accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Our goal is to advance academic opportunities for K-12 students of all backgrounds in both urban and suburban markets. We offer a unique education model that empowers students with leadership, teamwork, confidence, and problem-solving skills to ensure academic success. Our STEM-based curriculum uses marine science, sailing, powerboating, and adventure sports as learning platforms. We hope you will play a role in helping us continue this important educational mission—in person, online, or on the water!
