Don’t spend your Black Friday in busy shopping malls, #OptOutside! REI began a national campaign to get people outdoors by closing their stores and giving their employees a paid day off to enjoy nature on Black Friday. REI chooses life outdoors, and so do we! Not only will you get some fresh air, but time outside really helps! Outdoor exercise can help you feel better and combat many health conditions. It also helps us relax and gives our brains a rest from our busy schedules. Want to join us and #OptOutside? Here are three ways to do just that!
- Many state parks offer free admission on Black Friday aka Green Friday! If you live in a city, don’t worry! You can venture outside city limits, or explore public parks, gardens, or other spaces in your area! Looking to join a group? Check out the Avalonia Preserve’s Soft Opening of Hoffman Preserve! The group will start the hike at 1pm. More details here.
Visit a local beach
- If you live on the coast, the beach is a great place to visit especially once it’s quiet after the busy summer season! Although it’s chilly, bundle up and take a walk by the water! While you’re there, grab a bag and do a beach clean up! Don’t forget to log your marine debris in the Marine Debris Tracker App as part of team NESS. (PS Musician/NESS Surf Educator Will Evans is doing a beach clean up on Saturday, November 30 in Westerly, go Will! Check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/events/579221829550818/)
Take your coffee outdoors
- If you don’t have too much time for an all-day activity, just spend a few moments while drinking your morning coffee (or tea!) outdoors! Take a minute to look at the environment around you and give a moment of thanks.
- We’ll be outdoors, hope to see you there!
