In 2017, in collaboration with Sail To Prevail, NESS launched its adaptive sailing program in Stonington, CT. Our adaptive sailing program brings the fun and therapeutic qualities of sailing to individuals with diverse needs. We are excited to announce our adaptive sailing program will be expanding in 2018.

About Our Program

At NESS, we aim to get everyone out on the water regardless of age, skill level, or ability. Through our adaptive sailing program, NESS provides access to the ocean and takes students out of their comfort zones for personal growth and empowerment.

Our adaptive teaching methods and specialized equipment support individuals with a variety of cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Using our adaptive-ready, specifically designed Independence 20 sailboat, students with physical and cognitive disabilities will safely learn to sail with an experienced captain and teacher. Our staff attended a US Sailing’s Adaptive Sailing Course in order to be sure we have the proper adaptive facilities, equipment, training, and resources.

Lessons are available at our Stonington location Wednesday through Friday from 10am to 12pm or 1pm to 3pm and on Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm. Lessons are $150/session, scholarships are available.

About Our Gear

Last fall we installed an ADA complient ramp to make our docks easier to access. We also created a transfer box to help sailors get from a wheelchair into the cockpit of the boat. Our Independence 20 is a super stable boat and is outfitted with two bucket seats that can pivot from one side of the boat to the other. These seats are equipped with 5-point harnesses so when sailors are steering the boat or handling lines, they can feel secure.

Save the date for May 19^th! We will hold our first ever Adaptive Sailing Demo Day. We are finalizing details but are excited to host a day that will give our community access to adaptive sailing.
