Many people are surprised to learn that most of NESS’s resources are devoted to bringing its innovative educational programs to students from underserved schools and school districts.

NESS programs encourage children to learn while having fun. Studies show that experiential learning helps all children because they can make the connection between the subjects they study in school and the real-world applications of those subjects. Unfortunately, experiential learning opportunities are not always available on an equal basis. NESS provides opportunities for students in our communities, for whom it might otherwise be out of reach, and introduces students to college and career opportunities, particularly in STEM fields, that they may never have thought of before participating in NESS.

NESS helps to improve academic skills, but also imparts life skills. NESS takes children out of their comfort zones, encourages them to be innovative and self-reliant, promotes leadership skills, and helps students understand the importance of teamwork and, by extension, stewardship and community. These are valuable lessons that should be available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay.

The schools that work with NESS enthusiastically support NESS’s programs. While some schools can cover the cost of programs for their students, not all schools able to support the entire cost of this type of education. To assure that programs are available to all children, regardless of means, NESS makes up the difference through fundraising and grants.

By contributing to NESS, you give children, especially in underserved schools, the opportunity to succeed in academics and life.

HOW OUR PROGRAMS HELP CHILDREN LEARN

NESS gives students opportunities to thrive and gain skills necessary to be successful in life and education by teaching them STEM education and life skills through fun activities like sailing, kayaking, fishing, and snorkeling. Inquiry-based, youth-centered activities put students in charge of their own learning and set them up for confidence-building success. Students explore, discover, design, engineer, and investigate their world. It is about learning by doing and problem solving in a safe and supportive environment, with recreation and ocean adventure education as the base.

HOW WE WORK WITH COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

The learning experiences NESS provides engage students with fundamental questions about the world, provide challenging field based experiences in the local marine and community environment, and create direct connections to relevant science locally and globally. Our curriculum, aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and Ocean Literacy Principles, combined with ocean adventure activities, delivers a powerful and effective learning model. WHO ARE THE CHILDREN WE SERVE?

NESS works with students that face stark deficits across several educational risk factors including, but not limited to, child poverty, single parent families, and juvenile violent crime. These risk factors have been shown to have negative consequences on students' emotional & cognitive development. Many of the schools, and school districts, have very high percentages of students who qualify for free and/or reduced-price lunch. In some cases, the percentage is so high that the entire school qualifies. Need is also significant across school attendance and chronic absenteeism (defined as missing more than 10% of school days in an academic year).
