  • Cardboard Boat Project at BDJMS

    One of the best aspects of the engineering process is creating something from start to finish. How better to teach the 8th grade STEM students at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School (BDJMS) this process then to have them envision, plan, and create a boat from start to finish?



  • Kayaking Merit Badge

    2 classes/2 hours per class     $55/participant

    Minimum 6 students; 2 chaperones  Please call for availability, 860-535-9362.

    Prerequisites:  Students must be able to pass the Boy Scouts of America Swim test. 
    Test will be given at the beginning of the class.

    Earn your kayaking badge with a badge counselor from NESS!  Learn safety while on the water in the classroom and then get on the water in one of our sit-on-top kayaks.  Some activities include:
    • Safely capsize and perform a wet exit in a kayak
    • Learn a forward stroke, backstroke, forward sweep, reverse sweep, draw stroke and stern draw
    • Paddle a buoyed course

    NESS has the capability to handle up to 60 students at once by rotating groups of students at different learning stations that can include: Marine Science, Intro to Sailing, Team Building and … more

    Discover some skills to survive in the wild.  Learn how to build a shelter, find food, and survive on limited resources.  Compete in a number of team challenges, simulate a variety of situations, learn about your environmental surroundings, and have fun presenting your plans to the NESS survivor experts.  Learn fishing skills using rods & reels, dip nets, seine nets, and cast nets.  Includes: fishing, boat trips and snorkel adventures; Voting off the island not included

    We will be holding our fourth annual NESS Fest on Saturday, June 18, from 11am-3pm, at 70 Water Street in Stonington.  



  • Kayak Snorkeling (Ages 11-17)

    Includes: snorkeling, kayaking & free driving    $220/week

    Paddle and explore Little Narragansett Bay during the best months of the year.  Kayak to estuaries, coves, islands, and other places where power boats are not able to go.  Snorkel the warm waters of the harbor and the bay, while learning about local ecosystems and the species that inhabit them. Challenge your snorkeling skills by learning to free dive, using NESS fins. No previous kayaking experience is necessary, but an interest in the ocean, snorkeling, and kayaking is a must for this adventure week. 

    Morning Class:

    Mon – Friday,  9:00 am – 12:00 pm
